The Tokyo Police Club show at the Social was exactly what one would hope for from three indie rock bands in a fairly small venue. Bands whose performances energized the crowd and made it clear that these guys love what they do and have so much fun doing it.
The stage was set for the show with a LiteBrite (brings back childhood memories..) spelling out 'Ruby Coast' to let us know that they would start the show. While not too familiar with the band, they were excited to be stopping in Orlando on their first US tour and they did not disappoint as they delievered the opening set.
Next up was the Harlem Shakes, performing their last show on the tour (replaced by Ra Ra Riot for the remainder). The other bands were sad to see them go, and the boys of the Harlem Shakes were sad they couldn't make it to Universal.
By the time Tokyo Police Club opened up their portion of the show, the Social was packed in this sold out concert. Enlisting the audiences help with clapping on songs such as "Citizens of Tomorrow" and "If It Works" really got the audience envolved in the show. They played all their best songs, "Listen to the Math" being one of my favourites, sounding just as good as on the album. "Your English is Good" really got the crowd singing along and dancing - "Oh, give us your vote/If you know/What's good for you!". They finished up with "Cheer It On" and then once again brought out the two other bands on stage to jam out together for the last time on the tour.
The best thing about this show was the Ruby Coast and the Harlem Shakes performing on stage together after each of their sets, and then all the bands coming together to rock out to close out the show.
You can catch Tokyo Police Club and Ruby Coast for the remainder of the tour with Ra Ra Riot, and Harlem Shakes will be at SXSW this month.
